It's not Big Brother without oversize props and shooting water.
Designed and engineered this BB12 HOH Endurance Comp complete with moving surfboards and lots of water. This rig is a BB favorite and has been reused many times throughout later seasons.
These challenges must not only be designed to work the first time on live television, but they also have to be designed to last hours and hours and hours, in all kinds of elements. If one thing goes wrong, or one contestant is accidentally given an advantage/disadvantage--there would be hell to pay. We design it to work the first time and every time.
Once the engineering aspect of the rig is out of the way, the fun part is creating the "experience" to go with it--and thanks to a very talented art department crew, it's always larger-than-life.
For this BB BBQ, we used punching bags to create giant hot dogs suspended from a truss rig.
We hand carved foam to create charcoal briquets, and threw in a few orange pillows here and there to create the hot ones. All had to be soft in the event of a contestant falling off their hot dog. With our giant ketchup and mustard squirters, falling off was pretty much guaranteed.
One of the most classic Big Brother moments of all time. Zach vs Dick in the Season 8 8 Final HOH Competition. We created an overgrown garden, engineered a monsoon to rain down on them, and even had a motorized rabbit going around on an arm trying to knock them off their pedestals.
